After participating in the #HourofCode on Khan Academy with the class I created the above Christmas card by coding the functions below! It felt great and was very empowering to create something on the computer. I'm hooked and can't wait to learn more functions. Try to write your own greeting card below. You can write the functions in the box on the left and they will appear in the box on the right. Project: Greeting CardMade using: Khan Academy Computer Science. How did you like coding? What two descriptive adjectives would you use to describe the #HourofCode? Comment on this post.
Yesterday morning was pretty status quo until I checked my email and instantly my interest was peeked. I received the email below from Khan Academy's creator, Sal. I immediately thought of you guys, my students! Coding is a skill that kids your age need to learn, and dare I say want to learn? I figure what better way to learn coding than at class with friends you can ask questions to and learn alongside? Starting today we will embark on the Hour of Code. Who knows, you may love it and be hooked, or you may hate it and never want to try again. It's my job as your teacher to expose you to new challenges and help you figure out what you are passionate about.
You can find more information and tools for coding on a new page I created. Go to "Information for Students" at the top of our home page. From there, go to the scroll down "Investigate Menu". Slide your little cursor over to "You Can Code", and you're there. (You can also click this link if you are lazy!) Has anyone ever told you that you were too young to do something important? If so, that person was wrong! There are tons of kids your age or younger making an impact on thousands of people. If you are passionate about whatever you do and you put your mind to it, you can do it. Check out Titus, a two year old, that is sharing his love of basketball trick shots with the world. What do you want to share with the world? After you do an act of kindness, leave a comment of what you did. Dear Parents,
The holiday season is the most wonderful time of the year! Sometimes in our culture we can get caught up in the materialism of the season and often forget what the season is really about, giving. Help me teach our children the value of “paying it forward”. Paying it forward is doing an act of kindness to or for someone. Throughout the next weeks we are going to be talking about the importance of giving to others and how great it feels to think of others first. We are going to be reading books about giving and will brainstorm ways to “pay it forward” in class. I am asking each student to think of three ways to “pay it forward”. The ideas can be as simple as helping a neighbor or family member with a chore, or as involved as volunteering at a soup kitchen. Paying it forward is not always about giving money, and for this project I would like students to be creative and think of ways not involving money for their acts of kindness. Please keep in mind that the benefits of helping others will be greater when your child takes the responsibility and makes the effort on his or her own. There is no greater reward than knowing they were able to make a difference in someone’s life with their own abilities. You can support them by helping them choose ways to help that fits with their talents and abilities. As your child is paying it forward, I would love for you to help your child document his or her experience with service learning. Please help your child by taking pictures, recording a video clip, or jotting down details that will help your child capture the experience of giving. Your child will be able to choose how to share his or her wonderful experience. In class they will be writing about the three ways they have chosen to pay it forward. Our culminating activity will be a share time where each student will share his or her acts of kindness. Students can make a poster, video, comic strip, newspaper article, picture book, Prezi, etc. They will receive one grade on their reflective essay and presentation. We will have our share day on December 18th, so please have all the artifacts prepared by then. I hope your child has fun and really gets back as much as he or she gives. I will be doing this as well, finding ways I can pay it forward. As students complete acts of kindness they can comment on this post to share what they did. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected]. Thank you in advance for your help! Merry Christmas! Feliz Natal! |
