Students have been working hard to write their informational pieces. We are now at the publishing stage. Good writers make publishing choices that will entice their readers. Below are two examples of the same piece of writing, one with text features and strong publishing choices and the other with no text features. Which is more enticing? Why?

This week 5th graders formed colonies and began a test of survival. Throughout the next months colonies will pack their ships for the new land, settle land, farm, hunt, gather, and lots more. Who will survive?
Ms. Veazey found an awesome website, Colonial House, that features colonial life. Check it out and make a comment on the activity you did. What did you learn? What is a connection you made? Today's Google Doodle acknowledges and thanks Jonas Salk, the inventor of the polio vaccine. In the past decade vaccines have become a controversial discussion. Many people feel strongly on both sides, vaccines are good and help protect people or vaccines are dangerous and should not be given. Write your opinion on the padlet below, be sure to add your name (and location) in your posting.
Last week students in all 5th grade classes began writing their weekly entries into their RRJs. Here is the rubric with this unit's standards. Currently students have only addressed the 5.2 standards, but each week the teachers will reveal the standards we are working on during our guided reading. Parents--make sure to ask your child about their RRJ and have discussions about what your child is learning from their non-fiction book. In all the 5th grade classes students have discussed the current drought in Campinas. We have brainstormed ways to conserve water, but unless it rains it might not be enough. Water is a basic need of life, and millions of people around the world don't have access to clean water. Watch the video below and comment on the director's purpose and message. Was it powerful? Why or why not? Does it persuade you to think twice about your water usage? Why or why not?
Tomorrow, October 9th, EAC 4th and 5th graders will celebrate Children's Day with Field Day. Make sure to wear active clothing and bring a water bottle to quench your thirst.
I have created a separate page to keep track of our participation in the Global Read Aloud. Collaborating classes and 5A students please go to the Global Read Aloud page to follow along on our journey of reading The Fourteenth Goldfish.
Today is the day! 5A is joining 244,000 students in over 30 different countries for the Global Read Aloud. Our class will connect with classes from 3 different continents through our blog and twitter (#GRA14 and #GRAGoldfish) . Each day we will read from The Fourteenth Goldfish by Jennifer L. Holm. It is important we don't read ahead because we don't want to ruin it for the other classes. Each day as we read our social director will record our thinking as we read and will work on publishing a post for other classes to read and comment on. 5A students-what do you think it will be like to connect with classes from other continents? Do you think students living in another part of the world will have different opinions and connections than you? pre-reading assignment (Below) After investigating the term "fountain of youth" answer the pre-reading question on the padlet wall. Please include evidence or reasoning from your investigation notes to support your answer. Follow up QuestionOn Friday we had a publishing party to celebrate all the new authors and their first published stories. Watch the video below to get a glimpse of the celebration. Parents--in the comment section please write your feedback and thoughts on the publishing party. What impressed you about our young authors? What did you feel as you listened to all the personal narratives? Could you make any connections to your life? Students--what does it feel like to be a published author? What did you like about reading your story? What could you improve for next time? |
