monday  motivation  -- "happy" world   down  syndrome day video

Picture
We are currently reading Because of Mr. Terupt for our read aloud.  We learned Jeffery's brother Michael had down syndrome. This video makes me smile and speaks to me by showing that we are all alike, even through our differences.  The people in the video have down syndrome, but they are happy and love life just like you and me.  I can't help but smile and dance along with them to celebrate being happy, no matter what defines you.

In our story all the characters are defined, for good or bad, through their narration.  Alexia is defined as a brat, but is she really when we look deeper?  Luke is defined as a smart student, but isn't he more than that?

What defines you?  What thing in your life do people focus on to make you feel less than you are?  For so long in my life I was defined by my height. It may sound silly, but I felt ashamed of being tall because people picked on me and I thought it limited me in the things I could pursue.  It took a long time for me to be HAPPY about what God gave me.  Please share in the comments what defines you.

Gabi,

When people define you for what wear or don't wear try to remind them that a person is more than what they see on the outside. Share your feelings with them, I bet they don't know it hurts your feelings.

Nick,

How did that make you feel? How did that define you?

Nick, why did you get sad? Was it because they laughed at you?

Nick,

You should ignore that because at least you have a phone different than me, so just don't be sad because you have some stuff that other people don't have.

Sometimes people here define me as Japanese and that makes me feel bad, because I am not from Japan!

DK and KJ,

Remember when we talked about the word ignorant? I think people call you Japanese or speak Japanese to you because they lack the knowledge and are uniformed. Try explaining to them the differences between the countries and cultures. You can be a good citizen when someone is ignorant and you help them.

Giovanni,

I feel the same way when people do that with my sisters and me. I think they mean it as a compliment because my sisters are so great, but that doesn't change that fact that I want people to notice me as an individual.

Sometimes people try to make connections between me and my sister, trying to find similarities between us and that kind of made me feel bad

Kj,

You should ignore that, it doesn't really matter and the most good things are the differences not the similarity

That happened to me a lot to, I think it is because they are just playing around, and they don't know that it hurts your feelings. I tried talking to them and they never said that again. Why don't you try talking to them too?

Enzo,

Why does that make you feel bad about that? Is it something you wish was different about yourself? I think sometimes when we feel bad about things we wish were different it is no fun to hear people tell us we are exactly that thing.

"DO YOU EVEN HAVE THE ONLY THING THAT I HAVE FROM THE WHOLE WORLD, AND THAT IS TAXA!"
I also have a question, why didn't you fight up back? Were you scared to fight or against them?
