Today in The 14th Goldfish Oppenheimer and the atomic bomb was brought up again when Ellie ran into Mr. Ham passing out brochures titled "Hiroshima: the war begins". We spent awhile discussing the effect on the atomic bomb being dropped on Hiroshima during the World War 2. While Ellie is mesmerized by the atomic bomb, there are clear negative consequences from nuclear weapons. Watch the video below and share your reactions and reflections on Sadako.

As a pre-activity before we read the 13th chapter of The 14th Goldfish add your prediction to our Padlet. Then as Mrs. K reads write any questions, connections, visualizations, or inferences you make as you listen on our Whatcha Thinking Padlet . Before read aloudDuring read aloud (Chapters 13 and 14) In our world it's so easy to connect with people (and classes in our case), which makes projects much more fun. The map above shows all the classes participating in the Global Read Aloud. Just this week we tweeted the author of The 14th Goldfish, Jennifer Holm, and got not one, but two return tweets! What would you ask the author of a book you are enthralled in? Today we Skyped with Mr. Balcom's 5th grade class in Nebraska to discuss the book. We asked and answered questions about the book and ended with questions about each class' location. Mr. Balcom was generous enough to share the pictures they took during our call. Check out the photo album below of our Skype call. 5A students, what are your thoughts on the Skype call? We are only 2 weeks into the #GRA14 with #GRAGoldfish and we can't get enough. It is hard to only read the allotted amount each week because we are dying to know what happens next!
In chapter 8 Ellie and her grandfather talk about scientists and he says, "Average people just give up at the obstacles we face every day. Scientists fail again and again and again. Sometimes for our whole lives. But we don't give up, because we want to solve the puzzle." Question 1: Do you agree that average people give up easily? Question 2: Why do you think her grandfather credits scientists for not giving up? Question 3: What evidence does her grandfather have that scientists don't give up? Question 4: Have you ever faced an obstacle and persevered to be successful? Question 5: Can you think of another profession that solve the puzzle by not giving up? Pick a question (or multiple) and write your answer in the comment section. Be sure to leave your name and location. In chapter 8 we also learned Jonas Salk developed the vaccine for polio. We, along with Ellie, learned what polio is and how it can be prevented. Check out the sites below with more information about polio.
Government of South Australia Kids' Health News on Polio (May 2014) Polio: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments (Video) Former American President FDR had Polio I think that the grandpa will run away of school because he already went to school once so he doesn't want to go to school again. ---- Anna Laiz #10
I think that the grandpa will escape from the school because he already learned enough and Ellie will have to go out and find him. Then, they will do experiments together and will want to be a scientist when she grow up. -Mihaya I think the grandpa is going to make something very weird and he is going to escape from school and Ellie is going to start doing experiments with him -Salome I think the grandpa will go to school and he will get everything right in school because he is an adult. YASMIN I think Ellie’s grandfather will turn out being friends with Ellie and they are going to have lots of experiences together, Because in the text they were getting along together.--Bruno V. I think Ellie is going to experiment things with her grandfather and they will become rich. Luiza :) :) I think that maybe grandpa is going to go away from school in the middle of it and Elli is going to have to find him. --Malu I think grandpa will go out of school and go back to his laboratory because he is mad because he is going to school and he will get all the things right (in school before he goes to the laboratory) because he is a scientist and everybody will want to be friends with him because he’s smart but he will not want to be friends with them (students). l. I also think Ellie's mom will be worried about grandpa and go after him when he goes to his laboratory. ------ Vitor I think that Ellie will like her grandfather and that she will hang out most of the time with him. I think that will happen because she was very interested in what her grandpa had to say. I also think since she knows that her grandpa can stay young she will buy her 14 goldfish and make it young by the grandpa's experiment. I thought of that because of the name of the book. Also that will happen because the fish is in a lab experiment bottle on the cover.-Julia I think that since Ellie’s grandpa is going to babysit her, he and Ellie will do experiments together. And I think that Ellie is going to say that she wants to be a scientist when she grows up. -Bia I think Ellie will like science, but her mom will not like it. And grandpa will be sick, because the jellyfish stuff will affect him also grandpa will put jellyfish stuff in the goldfish and it will be 14th goldfish. - Ian I think Ellie will be on her grandpa`s side and will start to do weird experiments with him. Also her grandpa will escape from school and Ellie will have to find him.~Mariah Look what I found via Twitter #GRAGoldfish. Check out the article at: http://www.mnn.com/earth-matters/animals/stories/immortal-jellyfish-does-it-really-live-forever. There are also some videos on YouTube you can watch. What are your thoughts about this? Do you think that Jennifer Holm got the idea from this jellyfish? Can you research and find any other animals that are regenerative?
We know good readers ask questions and monitor & clarify, so in 5A we are practicing how to apply our strategies during our read aloud. We created a Google Doc to keep track of what we KNOW, what we WANT to know, and what we LEARN during our reading each day. Students--can you research about the questions we had as we read? If you find the answer please add it to the comments and we will discuss it before reading tomorrow. |
